Routing approaches in Wireless Sensor Networks

Wireless sensor networks consist of many tiny sensor nodes distributed in a particular area to identify events in their surroundings. WSNs have different features and restrictions compared to traditional networks such as dense levels of node deployment, uncertainty of sensor nodes and high energy consumption, calculations and memory constraints. Due to routing and controlling density, network layer has a significant impact on energy consumption. Therefore, the importance of designing a proper routing protocol cannot be ignored. Various protocols are designed for wireless sensor networks, each one in a way that specifies how data is transmitted to prevent loss of energy and increase the lifetime of the entire network. Wireless sensor networks consist of small sensors with limited capabilities in terms of power supply, processing power and memory. With the advancement of technology, the applications of WSNs has become more widespread. Each sensor node handover its data via shared media wirelessly to a sink node or central node in either single step or multiple steps. Sensor nodes perform routing before sending the data.
