Designing an action plan for enhancement of rail tourism competitiveness in Iran

Abstract

In order to develop the tourism industry, the growing tourism income in the world has attracted increasing attention to various types of tourism to address a wider audience. Amongst the growing types of this industry one can mention slow tourism; as tourism trains are a subset of them. To promote the competitiveness of tourism trains industry of Iran, this Study tries to present and investigate diverse strategies. In this article, the presented strategies are the product of data collection through 14 scientific interviews and a review of nine international tourism competitiveness books and reports which were analyzed by Grounded Theory method in three stages of open, axial and selective coding. Following this analysis a competitiveness model has been presented. The proposed strategies are presented in two general directions. The first phase includes planning strategies for strategic tourism, which includes four phases of environmental analysis, definitions, operational plans, monitoring and implementation. The second phase, called "executive strategies", have been developed for tourism trains operators, executive enterprises as well as railway and government. The section of executive enterprises and tourism railway trains consist of marketing and sales strategies, tourism operations and human’s capital. Moreover, in the railway and government sectors, strategies are presented in two categories: technical and non-technical. The strategies of this study are applicable to all agencies active in the tourism trains, train operators and the railways of Islamic Republic of Iran.
