Ability to write effectively in English seems to have attracted a considerable amount of attention during the last decade. This skill of language plays a vital role especially for those in higher education since establishing an appropriate voice and having fluency through the discourse of writing can help them communicate their thoughts more easily and naturally. Considering the value of academic writing for EFL students in all fields of English, in this paper, it is intended to seek what types of lexical bundles students use in their writings and investigate the effect of the use of lexical bundles on their writing. The participants consist of fifty postgraduate Iranian EFL learners, divided into two groups. Both groups were asked to write an opinion essay about the same topic except that one group (control) was not informed about the use of lexical bundles while the other group (experimental) was. The results, obtained via independent samples T-test, revealed that there was a positive effect of the frequency use of lexical bundles on the participants’ writing quality.
