Empirical Analysis the behavior of Debt Maturity and Financial Reporting Quality on Investment Inefficiency

This research empirically analyzed the behavior of debt maturity and financial reporting quality on investment inefficiency. Investment inefficiency is measured based on the model presented by Biddle et al (2009) and financial reporting quality is measured based on the model presented by Dechow & Dichev (2002). The research sample includes 219 companies listed in Tehran Stock Exchange over the period 2010 - 2014. The results indicated that there is a significant and negative relationship between investment inefficiency and financial reporting quality. Also, there is a significant and negative relationship between investment inefficiency and debt maturity. In fact, investment inefficiency is less in those firms with high financial reporting quality and high short term debts. In such situation, both financial reporting quality and short term debt maturity can control investment behavior in firms, so investment inefficiency should be reduced. Other results showed that growth opportunity and sales volatility have a significant and negative effect on investment inefficiency; while operational cash flow, loss, size and volatility in operational cash flow have a significant and positive effect on investment inefficiency. However, age and tangibility have no effect on investment inefficiency.
