DYNAMIC DATA RECORDING IN THE NEW ENGLAND POWER SYSTEM AND AN EVENT ANALYZER FOR THE NORTHFIELD MONITOR

In the deregulated power industry, the increasing number of power marketers and independent power generators increases the variability of power flow patterns in the transmission system, thereby reducing the ability of transmission planners and operatiors to predict the critical operating conditions and limits.  Consequently, transmission system operators need new tools to understand the effects of disturbances. Among these needs are the tools to classify and identify disturbances as they occur on the power system.  Examples of power system events illustrate different types of disturbances.  Functional Design Specifications (FDS) and Graphic User Interface (GUI) for the MATLAB-based software application, called “Event Analyzer” which is currently developed for the analysis of the data taken from one monitor are discussed in the paper.  The paper explains how the data captured by Dynamic Recording Devices (DRD) can be analyzed by the Event Analyzer in time and frequency domains, and how the results of the analysis can be used for the classification and identification of different types of events. 

Although the paper describes the analysis of the data taken only from one location, it includes discussion and plans for the installation of new recording devices in the New England Power Pool (NEPOOL) and the requirements of such devices for the analysis of the data taken from multiple locations.
