Sustainable production of barley via inoculation with nitrogen fixing bacteria and mycorrhiza

 The present study was carried out to investigate the effect of seed inoculation with mycorrhiza and nitrogen fixing bacteria on the growth and grain yield of barley. The experiment was conducted with a factorial arrangement in the form of a randomized complete block design with three replications. Treatments of the experiment included nitrogen and phosphorous application rates of control; 33%; 67%; 100% of the recommended dose, which was 150 kg N ha^-1 and 120 kg super phosphate triple ha^-1 , and Azospirillum lipoferum + Glomus mosseae, Azotobacter chroococcum + Glomus mosseae inoculations. Seeds inoculated with organic fertilizers produced greater fertile spikelets than control. It was noted that biofertilizers used in this study added to 33% of recommended N-P fertilizers showed most promising results in terms of TSW. In our experiment we observed remarkable increase in the yield under biofertilization. Harvest index ranged from 38.5% in control up to 40.5% in dual inoculation of Azospirillum + Glomus and Azotobacter  + Glomus. The stepwise regression analysis verified that the flag leaf area and spike length had a marked increasing effect on the seed yield of barley. It was concluded that the barley crop inoculated with Azospirillum in addition to Glomus mosseae or Azotobacter in addition to Glomus mosseae showed superior performance with higher grain yield.
