Liquid-Liquid Equilibria of (Water + Acetic Acid + Benzyl acetate) Ternary System At T = 298.2

 In this study liquid-liquid equilibrium (LLE) data were measured for [water (1) + acetic acid (2) + benzyl acetate (3)] at 298.2 K and atmospheric pressure and tie- lines related to the equilibrium data has been shown in the phases diagram. The cloud-point titration method was used to determine solubility data. The concentration of each phase was determined by acidimetric titration, the Karl-Fisher technique, and refractive index measurements. The studied ternary system exhibits type-1 behavior of LLE, where only one liquid pair (water + solvent) is partially miscible and the two liquid pairs (acid + water) and (acid + solvent) are totally miscible.  The reliability of the experimental tie-line data was checked through the Othmer-Tobias and Hand correlations. It is apparent from the values of the separation factors (from 4.81 to 12.97) that organic solvent (benzyl acetate) has the ability for extraction of acetic acid from aqueous solutions.
