Cooperative Learning and its Effectiveness on Iranian Intermediate Level Learners’ Writing Performance and Retention of Information

چکیده مقاله

Cooperative Learning (CL) appeared to attract lots of attention and became popular a few decades ago. Some potential advantages of CL for language learners are chances for L2 interaction, enhancing L2 proficiency, improving and integrating L2 skills, and content learning. In the recognition of such issues, this study attempted to investigate the effect of cooperative learning on EFL learner’s achievement and attitudes; accordingly, to gain this aim two groups of the same language proficiency level (intermediate) were randomly selected as the control and experimental. The number of the participants was 48. All the participants were male whose age ranged from 19 to 26. The students in both the experimental and control groups took part in a pre-test, a post-test, and a delayed post-test. The participants in the experimental group were requested to fill out a questionnaire related to cooperative learning. It was found that the students who participated in the CL method had greater retention of the lessons taught in the classroom. The results indicated that the learners in the CL group, in all the related cases, did outperform those whose classes were conducted as the routine program put forwarded based on the standards of the institute.
