Dehumanization in J.D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye

This study provides a comprehensive analysis of J.D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye based on Althusser’s theory of ideology; his concepts of ISA, and interpellation. This novel concerns the corruption and betrayal existing between the individuals. The dominant classes have their own ideology to exploit the dominated class. The discourse in which the subordinate classes live and think is controlled by the ideological state Apparatus; this discourse is made of the institutions developed by the ruling classes to maintain their cultural dominance. In this novel, it is shown how the adult society, including schools, families, museums, and the vulgar language, hails and interpellates the innocent children as subjects. Holden Caulfield is the teenager who cannot consider himself as self-produced agents. He encounters an obstacle in which it is really difficult to pass from childhood to adulthood because of the dominant class of society and its dominant ideology. He rejects the world of adult because he thinks adult are corrupt. Therefore he does not want children grow up and go to the world whose ideology is dominant and corrupted.
