Assessment of soil-structure interaction in seismic evaluation of moment frames with different heights

Soil-structure interaction issue as a phenomenon affecting the structures behavior in the past few decades, has been taken into consideration by structure engineers. Evaluation of past earthquakes indicates that the impact of the interaction phenomenon on seismic response of structures compared with the response of fixed base structures depending on the soil and structure properties may be increasing or decreasing. Therefore, in this study a comparison between the seismic response of fixed base structures and soil-structure system is carried out. Four steel moment frames with different heights and a hard soil type according to Iranian earthquake standard is considered. Seismic responses, including stories relative displacement and shear distribution with and without consideration of structure is calculated using non-linear time history analysis. Direct method with initial boundaries for the soil is applied for analysis of soil-structure system.
