Localization of sensors in wireless sensor networks

Human supervision and control on some natural and abnormal phenomena on the one hand and daily communications in distant places on the other hand, requires the use of different types of wireless sensor networks (WSNs). The automatic positioning of sensors is of great importance for WSN. A WSN consists of numerous sensor nodes which makes the installation of Global positioning system (GPS) rather expensive. Furthermore, GPS consumes more power energy and may not provide accurate localization in an indoor atmosphere thus decrease battery life, which is a major drawback. Due to disadvantages in employing GPS or manually setting sensor locations, pulling out position on all sensor nodes is hardly likely in the case dense network. This paper therefore, investigates localization techniques used in wireless sensor networks based on the Received Signal Strength (RSS) so as to optimize the transmission of radio waves.
