A review of bioactive agent loaded skin wound dressing to repair skin tissue and scar reduction

Abstract

Following a skin injury, the damaged tissue is repaired through the coordinated biological actions that constitute the cutaneous healing response. Scars are a natural and unavoidable result from most wound repair procedures and the body’s physiological healing response. However, they scars can cause considerable functional impairment and emotional and social distress. There are different forms of treatments that have been adopted to manage or eliminate scar formation.

Many treatments have been proposed for cosmetic or functional improvement of scars. It is known that wound dressing and drug delivery  can have beneficial effects on remodelling of scar tissue. The variety of wound types has resulted in a wide range of wound dressings with new products frequently introduced to target different aspects of the wound healing process. The ideal dressing should achieve rapid healing at reasonable cost with minimal inconvenience to the patient. This review covers the latest research in the past decade on using either natural agents or synthetic biomaterials and drugs  in treatments for scar reduction.
