The Effect of intrathecal Magnesium Sulfate for spinal anesthesia on Postoperative Pain and duration of analgesia in the cesarean section

Among the problems of caesarean section is pain after surgery. Intrathecal administration of magnesium can strengthen the analgesic properties of opioids for pain control during labour and after surgery without increasing side effects. In this randomized double blind clinical trial study, we investigated the effect of adding different doses of intrathecal magnesium sulfate to bupivacaine in the caesarean section.
Materials and Methods: After institutional approval and obtaining informed women consent, 69 ASA physical status I-II women undergoing elective cesarean section with spinal anesthesia referred to Motahari hospital in Jahrom city were randomized to three groups: 1− 2 cc Bupivacaine 0.5%+ 0.8 cc normal saline (group C) 2− 2 cc Bupivacaine 0.5%+ 0.3 cc normal saline+0.5 cc magnesium sulfate 10% (group M50) 3− 2 cc Bupivacaine 0.5%+ 0.8 cc magnesium sulfate 10% (group M80). Mothers and staff involved in data collections were unaware of the mother group assignment. We recorded the following in the three groups: duration of analgesia and the severity of mother’s pain according to VAS were calculated in the three groups.
