Serological evidence of Brucella infection in free rang chicken of Fars province of Iran

Brucellosis is an important zoonotic disease caused by brucella  species . Iran is an endemic area for this infection. In rural area of Iran chicken is raised along with other domestic animals such as catlle and small ruminants traditionally. Therefore there may chance of chicken infection as reported from other countries. To identify any brucella infection in chicken, sera were collected and tested by RBPT and wright test.   One hundred and ninthy seven blood samples were collected from free range chickens of two rural regions ( Neireez and Zarghan) of Fars province of Iran. Sera were tested for Brucella antibodies by RBPT and Wright test as per standard procedures.From 197 serum samples being tested 19 samples (9.6 %) were positive in RBPT, while among RBPT positive samples ,18 samples (9.1% of all samples) were positive by Wright test . the titer obtained in Wright test varied from 1:10 to 1:80. There was no significant  differences in the rate of infection between the two regions being sampled.As there is no vaccination program for any types of chicken against  Brucella infection in Iran, therefore presences of anti brucella antibodies in free range chicken means occurance of natural infection among them, due to contact with infected materials in their environment. As well as indicating possible potential role for chicken as reservior for Brucella infection in human and other mammals in contact.
