Showalterian Reading of Margaret Atwood’s Lady Oracle and Edible Woman

چکیده مقاله

One of the major developments in literary studies in the forty years or so has been the emergence of feminist criticism, at the level of both theory and practice. Initially feminist criticism reflected the political goals of feminism in that authors and text were judged in accordance with how far they could be reconciled with feminist ideology. The image of women school of feminist critics adopts this point of view and is particularly concerned with how women characters are presented in literature. Elaine Showalter advocates “Gynocriticism”, in which the concerns of the woman as writer are central. She argues that the woman as reader approach of critics such as those in images of women school is restrictive in that it concentrates on male views of women. Showalter has divided the history of women literature into three phases: feminine, feminist, and female that she mostly has focused on the second wave of feminism. Because of these reason two works of art that  Showalterian  aspect of feminism are going to be applied on were written by Margaret Atwood, who is one of the feminist writers. The first novel of her which Showalter’s ideas are going to be applied on was named Edible Woman (1969), and the other one is Lady Oracle (1976).
