Overview the Types of Drilling Fluids Used in Oil Fields of Southwestern Iran

Discussion about drilling fluids is one of the most important issues in the drilling industry. Drilling fluid plays a very important role in drilling operations and inattention to it can lead to many problems: including lost circulation, stuck pipe, blowout and reduce rate of penetration. The cost of drilling fluid in a well may sometimes reach up to a million dollars and obviously, according to what was said serious consideration to the type and characteristics of the fluid used in when drilling a well is very important. Another one of the issues that is very important discussion about it, how to use and the various features of drilling mud used in various formations drilling in south of Iran. Without a doubt to determine the suitable mud type for drilling formation, first of all must be aware from characteristics of desired formation. For this purpose, in this paper after examining types of drilling fluids and as well as introducing formations of southern Iran, Features of suitable drilling fluids for drilling them will be explained. In the end it was concluded that for drilling of top hole formation (such as formations of Bakhtiari, Aghajari, Mishan and seventh member of Gachsaran formation) from drilling fluids fresh water, bentonite mud and for members first to sixth of Gachsaran formation from heavy weight muds such as barite, starch, limestone and for Asmari reservoir formation from salt water, water base mud of glycol, water base mud containing KCl, emulsion mud and oil base mud are used.
