Drilling Challenges During Development of North YARAN Oilfield in West of Iran

YARAN oilfield is one of oil accumulations which is shared by Iraq and its development has been placed at top priority for Iran. The planning includes the optimization of well design, drilling fluid, well completion methods, established by three major purposes of safety, minimum cost and proper completion. The aim of developing this field is to reach oil production rate of 30000 barrels per day. Primary production tests indicated that in spite of presence of light oil in Fahliyan and short perforated interval in Lower Gadvan formations, no commercial flow established even after acidizing due to poor reservoir quality and it was concluded that only Sarvak formation is only producible hydrocarbon reservoir in the studied field. However there are many challenges to reach this goal, some of them are drilling problems such as bit balling, fluid loss, stuck pipe, safety issues such as H2S hazard, environment pollution by drilling and production activities, limited technology in production facilities which restricts the well completion after reaching oil reservoir. In this paper challenges faced during drilling phase of developing this oilfield which is located in West of Iran, was reviewed and some solutions was suggested.
