Critical Discourse Analysis Of Football Reports: The case of Real Madrid official Website

One of the most influential approaches to discourse analysis is critical discourse analysis. Discourse analysis should have a critical dimension. (Van Dijk,2004). Royen Fowler reposed critical discourse analysis based on his work on language and ideology. Yarmohammadi (2004) defines critical discourse analysis as” a kind of discourse analysis which studies the unlawful use of power, dominance and inequality that happen in social and political context through speech and writing. Reporters often have to work at high speed to prepare after-match report. They sometime have to write some of the match report on the way to the game and then slot in a couple of paragraph. Four football reports, selected from Real Madrid official website comprised the corpus of the study. Two regarding Real Madrid’s won games and two its lost games selected from Real Madrid sport club’s own website for games played in the 2016-2017 La liga  and  Europe champions league. In the analysis, the study has applied Hodge and Kress’s (1996) syntagmatic models. Moreover, the texts were analyzed in terms of grammar, vocabulary semantics, the sound system, and cohesion-organization .(Fairclough, 1995).With regard to analyses of after wins a game , the writer tends to address the readers in different way as a way to overstate team’s strength, opportunities, trophies, goal scoring and everything whereby the text is made more enjoyable for the reader. After lose a game, the writers mainly focus on Real Madrid team and regardless of the result of the game, the writer tends to make more prominent and visible some event in favor of the Whites.
