Cultural Criticism and Literature

چکیده مقاله

Culture criticism has been an important part of human life at least since the Victorian era. In this trend of criticism, the main focus would be on the understanding of society and its people whereby the critic tends to investigate the thoughts, needs, liabilities and sufferings people go through in a given social milieu which has been created as a result of political, economic and industrial changes. But cultural criticism does not remain there and rather goes in deeper to study the very effect of different changes on the morality and psyche of society. We should not forget that society and social concerns are at the very backdrop of cultural criticism and we should also remember that culture includes all the literature, art, music and life style of a society along with its customs, ambitions and standards of morality. In this article, the scholar has attempted to study cultural criticism with literature in consideration, with the view that literature is the very presence of human soul in all its individuality, the truest expression of human character and suffering. Literature is rooted in the deep pain of humanity and is so real rather than being a joke. Literature is the expression of the pain which brings us closer to curing it. It might even be the cure itself. In literature, we find all fields of humanity from economy to sociology, psychology, art, technology and customs. Cultural criticism can best be viewed with reference to literature which is not only very human but also multi faceted. The scholar also attempts to hint at the important literature written in this regard while she would like to bring to notice concepts such as the Frankfurt School, Existentialism as important parts of cultural criticism. We can even see that important thinkers and intellectuals of our time are recognized as cultural critics. To put it in simple terms , we can say that cultural criticism in its pure form is true intellectuality which tries to see all the pains, sufferings, changes and their effect on culture, morality and future of the society in a whole picture. Cultural criticism is deeply thought over but subtly humane and public. In other words, cultural criticism takes the material for its investigation from the very society and its culture with all the interfering components, analyses it, tries to make the best out of it and give it back to the very society from which it started.
