Animal venoms and toxins are now recognized as major sources of bioactive molecules that may be tomorrow’s new drug leads. Venom is a secretion produced in a specialized gland in one animal and delivered to a target animal through the infliction of a wound. This secretion must contain molecules that disrupt normal physiological processes. Scorpion venoms contain a mixture of peptides, free amines, nucleotides, lipids and many other bioactive compounds, that when injected into humans cause a severe systemic inflammation.
