The Effect of Using Digital vs. Traditional Mind Mapping Strategy on Iranian Students Vocabulary Learning

چکیده مقاله

Vocabulary is an essential component of communicative competence, and vocabulary learning is an important ingredient of second or foreign language learning. The emergence of mind mapping, in the last decades, has established a powerful foundation in foreign language teaching and learning, in general, and English vocabulary learning, in particular. Therefore, this study was intended to investigate the effect of digital vs. traditional mind mapping strategy on Iranian EFL students’ vocabulary learning. In order to fulfill the intended purposes, 60 students (male) were selected as the participants. The selected participants were divided into two groups prior to the treatment. One group was exposed to digital mind mapping treatment, and the other one was exposed to the traditional mind mapping treatment. Both the mind mapping and the traditional method groups were given pre-tests in vocabulary learning. Conducting paired samples t-test and independent samples t-test, revealed that students in the mind mapping group showed greater achievement than students in the traditional group in vocabulary learning. The findings of this study may motivate researchers conducting other analytical and experimental studies in the application of mind mapping strategies in second language learning by Persian EFL learners and support the idea that teachers need to get familiar with new strategies and techniques facilitating the process of vocabulary learning and teaching.
