The Effect of two Medicinal Plants Extracts on Rat Serum

It is estimated that there are 500,000 species of plants on Earth. Relatively small percentages of these are used as foods by both humans and other animal species. Medicinal plants used in traditional medicine to treat various diseases are growing in our country, but the effects of biological active compound these plants are still unknown on human health. Crocus sativus and Portulaca Oleracea are widely used in Iran as herbal medicine. This study was performed to evaluate the effects of ethanol extraction of Crocus sativus and Portulaca Oleracea on the LDH and CK . Fifty Sprague- Dawley rats were allocated to five equal groups. The animals in groups 1 and 2 received Crocus sativus extract and the rats of the third and fourth group received Portulaca Oleracea extract. The rats in group 5, as the untreated group received ordinary diet . The results of this study indicate that Portulaca Oleracea extract was able to increase the LDH level in group 3 and 4 compared with the control group. The highest increase in the LDH level was observed in the group 4 that receiving the lower dose of the Portulaca Oleracea extract. This increase was significant when compare to the group 2 The increase of serum LDH level could be indicative of a chronic necrosis in the liver. The high level of serum CK was observed in rats receiving the high dose of Crocus sativus and low dose of Portulaca Oleracea, but exhibited no statically significant difference compared with control
