Comparison Thermogravimetric Study of Polyester and Cotton Fabrics Flame-Retardancy by Means of Impregnation with Red Phosphorus

The red phosphorus was found to be effective for flame-retardancy of polyester and cotton fabric. The suitable concentrations of red phosphorus were impregnated with the fabrics and vertical flame spread test accomplished. The optimum add-on value to impart flame-retardancy was determined around 3.95 g and 3.77 g of red phosphorus per 100 g of fabrics onto cotton and polyester fabrics respectively. TG/DTG curves of treated samples showed a well-timed weight loss occurred with regard to untreated specimens. This illustrates the sufficiency of impregnation and supports its catalytic action on flame-retardancy, which is compliance with data obtained via flammability test.
