Role of natural ventilation in vernacular settlements of hot humid regions; the case of the “Walled city” in Famagusta, Cyprus

This study aims to evaluate air movement problem in residential quarter of the Walled city in Famagusta, Cyprus, as a hot humid region and natural ventilation of the houses. To achieve this purpose, three objects should be investigated. First object is evaluating the factors effecting natural ventilation. The second one is evaluating common strategies applied for providing natural ventilation in vernacular architecture of hot-humid regions. And the last one is focusing on the case study to find out what strategies they utilized for providing natural ventilation both in urban and single dwelling scale. The data collection has been based on observation and interview. The interview has been carried out to find out if natural ventilation satisfying the inhabitants of the Walled City or not. Afterward, observation and physical analysis have been used for assessing natural ventilation in both urban and single dwelling scale in the Walled City to find out what strategies utilized for generating air movement in the streets and natural ventilation in the houses. At the end, after comparing the strategies were applied in the case study for natural ventilation with the common vernacular techniques in other hot humid regions, the study presents positive and negative points of the aforementioned area.
