Using ultrasonic sensors in agricultural Machinery Safety Systems

The safety alert system was designed to detect moving objects in the vicinity of agricultural machinery. This system uses two ultrasonic sensors to detect the distances between the sensors and the moving object and a position detection algorithm to determine the moving object’s position relative to the machinery. By using multiple sensors, the safety guard area could be increased. A Lab VIEW program was developed to acquire the distance signals from the two sensors and save the data into a file. This conceptual system has shown a promising potential for reducing machinery–related injuries on farms by protecting people and other objects in the vicinity of the machinery and by providing an automated safety warning to alert the operator when an unsafe situation occurs.
