چکیده مقاله
Under conditions of iron starvation, Bacteroidesfragilis expresses various iron-repressible outer membraneproteins (IROMPs). A 44-kDa protein appears to be one of the major outer membrane proteins (OMPs) in B. fragilis under iron stress and plays a role in heme uptake by this bacterium. This bacterium, which is gram-negative and nonsporforming, in combination with other aerobic bacteria especially Escherichia coli can cause mixed infections. Furthermore, B. fragilis is regarded as the most important anaerobic pathogen in intra-abdominal infections, and its crucial role in anaerobic bacteremia in the elderly, with an overall mortality of 66.1% has been discovered. And, studies indicate that B. fragilis is more virulent than Bacteroides vulgatus, the more common member of the intestinal flora. The researches, carried on the relationship between the growth properties of Bacteroides species and iron uptake, show that only strains which could grow in serum and plasma (as iron-restricted media) were virulent B. fragilis Here we describe the topology and 3D structure of a novel antigen which was discovered by mining the bacterial genome and that is very effective in inducing bactericidal antibodies. This antigen is a very good candidate for inclusion in universal vaccines against Bacteroides fragilis
