Optimization of biodiesel production from waste cooking oil by KOH-MgO catalyst using Taguchi method

In the present work, alkali catalysis method was used for biodiesel production using heterogeneous KOH-MgO catalyst. The Taguchi approach (Taguchi method) was adopted as the experimental design methodology, which was suitable for understanding the effects of the control parameters and to optimize the experimental conditions from a specified number of experiments. Different parameters such as reaction time, temperature of reaction, molar ratio of methanol to oil and catalyst concentration were optimized using Taguchi method. The experimental study revealed that 60 °C temperature of reaction, 30 min of time of reaction, 18:1 M ratio of methanol to oil and 3 wt% of concentration of catalyst are the optimal process parameters. The methyl ester yield under these optimum conditions was 76.5%. Results obtained from Taguchi method match closely with analysis of variance and methanol oil molar ratio is the most effective parameter in the production of waste cooking oil methyl ester or biodiesel.
