The study on biodiesel fuel on air pollutants reduction for urban buses, a case study in Tehran’s urban buses

Due to the large variety of bio-fuels and also the required effectiveness, there is need of to perform multiple tests to determine the effectiveness of this type of fuel emissions. So measurement of exhaust gases and index of emission smokes on the no-load operation mode is considered as first step pollutant tests requirements. For this purpose, we selected 10 buses from region No.9 of Tehran’s united bus company to determine amount of exhaust contaminants as sample. Parameters measured of exhaust gases are: unburned hydrocarbons (HC), Carbon monoxide (CO), Oxides of Nitrogen (NOX), and the value of smoke (opacity and K value). Measurements are done by 3 type fuel which produced from waste vegetable’s oil with mix ratio B2, B5 and B15.Results shown as percentage of bio-diesel increases, amount of (CO) will reduced up to 30 percent. For contaminants NOX and HC two different procedures are obtained, so that by rising percentage of biodiesel fuel up to B5 amount of this two contaminant respectively decreased and increased which is according to the universal founds. However, increasing amount of biodiesel fuel up to 15%, observed trend totally became reversed, the probable cause of that can be incompatibility of tested engines with high percentage of biodiesel fuel. In other hand, results related to effective of percentage of bio-diesel fuel on opaque measurement index does not show clear trend.
