Analysis of the Types of Failures in Induction Machines, Causes and Diagnostic Methods

Electric motors play an important role in the effective operation of machines and their industrial processes. In particular, squirrel cage induction motors are known as the draft horse in this industry. Therefore, detecting their failures can be economically beneficial. For example, it facilitates the management of the industrial plants, increases the system reliability, reduces maintenance cost and significantly recues the cost-benefit ratio. Bonnett and Soukup have proposed five failures modes for induction motor stators in three phases of squirrel-cage, including: end ring failures, coil to coil, phase failure, phase-to-phase and coil to ground. Stator winding and bearings failures are considered as ¾ of total failures for squirrel cage motors; moreover, most of the stator winding failures of the induction machine results from end ring insulation breakdown.
