The optical design of car headlights

In this paper the optical design of headlights is studied. Since the most important part of the headlight is low beam, the design is done based on it. Headlight consists of a light source, reflector and other optical elements such as lens and shield. The purpose of optical design of this system, is reaching to the best efficiency in output light sources, appropriate shaping for beam of light and guiding and focusing it in areas which are essential for driver’s view and visibility. Certainly all of these conditions will be done by considering legal regulations and standards. In this paper, firstly, reflectors is checked and then simulated with Light Tools software by considering all restrictions. The design is done by using a software which is based on the B-spline surfaces. B-spline surfaces are simulated on the basis of the structure of light source and properties of radiation and light distribution. Then a desirable intensity distribution is optimized according to ECE standard, by using other optical elements such as lens and shield.
